This seat was vacated after Akhilesh resigned upon becoming a Member of Parliament from Kannauj. Karhal, an SP stronghold, is one of the 10 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh up for by-elections. Candidate announced for Karhal by-election, SP eyes on retaining Akhilesh Yadav's old seat

INDC Network : Uttar Pradesh : In a significant political development in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has decided to field Tej Pratap Yadav as its candidate for the by-election on the Karhal assembly seat, located in Mainpuri. This seat has been vacant since SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav resigned after winning a parliamentary seat from Kannauj. Ram Gopal Yadav, the SP’s National General Secretary, made this announcement, signaling the party’s determination to retain this important seat.

Karhal holds special significance for the Samajwadi Party. Akhilesh Yadav won from this seat in the 2022 assembly elections, making it a stronghold for the party. As a result, the by-election here is being watched closely, with political dynamics heating up. Tej Pratap Yadav’s candidacy reflects the SP’s focus on maintaining its dominance in the region. Meanwhile, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is yet to announce its candidate, but there is considerable speculation about who they will field against the SP in this crucial contest.

The by-election on Karhal is part of a larger political battle, as by-elections are set to take place on 10 assembly seats across Uttar Pradesh. These include Katehari (Ambedkar Nagar), Milkipur (Ayodhya), Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar), Ghaziabad, Majhawan (Mirzapur), Sisamau (Kanpur Nagar), Khair (Aligarh), Phulpur (Prayagraj), and Kundarki (Moradabad). Out of these 10 seats, nine were vacated after SP MLAs were elected to the Lok Sabha, while the Sisamau seat was vacated following the disqualification of SP MLA Irfan Solanki, who was sentenced to jail.

The upcoming by-elections present a mix of challenges and opportunities for both SP and BJP. Out of the 10 seats, five were previously held by the SP, including Karhal, Milkipur, Katehari, Sisamau, and Kundarki. The other five were held by BJP and its ally, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). The Sisamau seat became vacant after SP leader Irfan Solanki lost his membership due to a criminal conviction. Meanwhile, other SP leaders like Awadhesh Prasad (Milkipur) and Zia ur Rehman Barq (Kundarki) resigned after winning parliamentary seats.

The BJP also has its share of vacancies to contend with. Vinod Kumar Bind resigned from the Majhawan assembly seat after being elected to the Lok Sabha from Bhadohi. Similarly, Anoop Singh resigned from Aligarh's Khair seat after winning in Hathras, and Praveen Patel vacated Phulpur after winning the Lok Sabha seat from the same constituency.

As the political atmosphere intensifies ahead of the by-elections, all eyes are on how the contest in Karhal unfolds. The seat has become a battleground of prestige for both SP and BJP, with each party aiming to strengthen its foothold in Uttar Pradesh.
