Crop crisis: Farmers in Madhya Pradesh are worried due to shortage of fertilizers

The fertilizer crisis in Madhya Pradesh is deepening. Farmers are facing long waits, black marketing, and chaos in distribution. The government has promised new schemes to improve the situation, but crop sowing is being affected due to non-availability of fertilizers on time. Farmer organizations have warned that if the situation does not improve, there will be protests.

Farmers of Madhya Pradesh are currently facing severe shortage of fertilizers. Long queues of farmers are seen at fertilizer distribution centers across the state. In many places, farmers have to stand in queues all night.

Despite this, farmers are not getting fertilizer.


Government arrangement of fertilizer distribution

Officials of the Agriculture Department say that 25 lakh tonnes of urea and 14 lakh tonnes of DAP and NPK have been supplied so far this year.

However, fertilizer is not available from cooperative societies of defaulting farmers. Despite the option of cash payment, they are facing problems.


Black market and black market crisis

Farmers allege that government fertilizer is being secretly given to traders, who are selling it in the black market for up to ₹2,000 per sack.


Government's plans and warning of farmers' organizations

The Madhya Pradesh government has promised to implement a new system next year, in which additional distribution centers will be built. Apart from this, it has also been said to seek help from the central government.  Farmers' organizations have warned that if the situation does not improve, they will open a front against the government.
