Court-ordered survey sparks violent clashes

Chaos and violence erupted due to a court-ordered survey at the Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. The situation worsened on Sunday morning when local residents pelted stones at the survey team. The police had to use tear gas and lathicharge to disperse the crowd.

Several people died in stone pelting and arson, several police officers injured

Three people were killed in the violent protest, while several police officers, including Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishna Kumar Bishnoi and Station Officer Anuj Tomar, were injured. The protesters set police vehicles on fire, turning the streets into a battlefield. SP Krishna Kumar confirmed the violence and said that strict action will be taken against the culprits under the National Security Act (NSA).

Identification of criminals through drone footage and CCTV

Officials are using drone footage and CCTV recordings to identify those responsible for the violence. As tension still prevails in the area, additional forces, including three PAC companies, have been deployed to maintain peace. Senior officers, including DIG Muniraj from Moradabad and ADG Ramit Sharma from Bareilly zone, were sent to assess and handle the situation.

Disputed mosque: The root of tension

The violence was triggered by a Hindu group's claim that the mosque was built on the site of an ancient Hindu temple. Supporters of this claim are demanding legal action and a survey to substantiate their claims. The survey was conducted between 7:30 am and 10 am on Sunday, the findings of which are expected to be submitted by November 29.

Political allegations and electoral politics

Samajwadi Party leader and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav criticised the Uttar Pradesh government, questioning the need for another survey after the previous one. He accused the BJP of using the issue to divert attention from real concerns and politicising religious matters for electoral gain.
