INDC Network: Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh): In a shocking incident, a doctor allegedly raped a 20-year-old Dalit nurse after holding her captive. The incident took place at a private hospital on Thakurdwara-Kashipur road in Moradabad district late Saturday night.
According to police, a complaint was lodged at Thakurdwara police station by the victim's father on Sunday, following which police arrested Dr Shahnawaz, a resident of Rajpur Kesaria, another nurse Mehnaz and ward boy Junaid. Police have registered a case under sections 61(2), 64 and 351(2) of the Indian Penal Code and section 127(2) of the SC/ST Act. Confirming the arrest, Moradabad SP (rural) Sandeep Kumar Meena said the medical examination of the victim has been completed and the hospital has been sealed.
Giving details of the incident, Thakurdwara area Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar said that the 20-year-old victim had been working as a nurse at the hospital for the past seven months. She had joined duty at around 7 pm on Saturday. Later in the night, Mehnaz, a nurse posted at the hospital, called her to meet Dr Shahnawaz in his room. When the victim refused to go, Mehnaz and ward boy Junaid forcibly locked her in a room located on the upper floor of the hospital and locked the door from outside.
After this, Dr Shahnawaz entered the room and raped the victim after holding her hostage. The doctor is alleged to have threatened to kill her and also used casteist slurs.
When the head nurse came on Sunday morning, the victim informed her about the incident, following which she was sent home. The victim told her family about the incident, following which her father lodged a complaint with the police. The police have launched an intensive investigation into the case and the three arrested accused are being questioned. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, raising concerns about the safety of women, especially those from marginalised communities.
On the instructions of Chief Medical Officer Dr Kuldeep Singh, a team of the health department inspected the hospital on Sunday evening and sealed it. The SP said that the investigation into the case is still on.
Women's safety is a matter of great concern. Rape and murder are increasing continuously in the country. It seems as if the government is giving a free hand to these accused. In recent times, crimes against women and girls have been increasing. Women's safety is now limited to papers and speeches only. The impact of women's safety on the ground is decreasing.
