A delegation of Kerala MPs led by Priyanka Gandhi met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and demanded a fund of Rs 2,000 crore for the rehabilitation of Wayanad landslide victims. Priyanka urged the Center to rise above politics and help. More than 400 people were killed in the devastating landslide in Wayanad on July 29.

Priyanka Gandhi said - rise above politics and help

In a 10-minute meeting at Parliament House, Priyanka Gandhi told Amit Shah that the victims of Wayanad should be kept aside from politics. He said, “The Prime Minister went to Wayanad, but he did not provide any concrete help. The Center should immediately release a fund of Rs 2,000 crore for the rehabilitation of the victims.”

Wayanad Landslide: Developments so far

1. Denial of Centre:

In August 2024, the Kerala government sought to declare Wayanad a national disaster , which the Center rejected. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said that there is no provision to declare such disasters as national disasters under the existing guidelines.

2. Active stance of Congress:

  • Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi visited Wayanad on 1-2 August.
  • Rahul Gandhi said, "Seeing the condition of the people, it felt like the time of my father's death."

3. Prime Minister's Visit:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Wayanad on August 10. He met the victims and reviewed the rescue operation with the officials. But the fund was not announced.
