Are Dalit and Muslim communities writing the script for ASP's victory in Meerapur by-election?
In the Meerapur assembly by-election, the trend of Dalit community is seen towards Azad Samaj Party (ASP) instead of Bahujan Samaj Party this time. Under the leadership of Chandrashekhar Azad, ASP has united the Dalit and Muslim communities to garner support in the area, which has made this contest more interesting. The support of Muslim community in favor of ASP candidate Zahid Hussain is also strengthening ASP. Due to this unity, ASP seems to have an upper hand in Meerapur seat. By-elections are going to be held on November 13 on nine assembly seats of UP, the results of which will be declared on November 23.
INDC Network: Uttar Pradesh: The political atmosphere of the by-election to be held on the Meerapur assembly seat of Uttar Pradesh seems to be changing rapidly. This time the electoral equation seems to be leaning in favor of ASP candidate Zahid Hussain from the Dalit and Muslim community. According to the report of UP Tak, increasing interest in ASP is being seen among the Dalit community in Meerapur area. While last time this seat was with RLD, this time the contest is at an interesting turn between ASP, RLD, SP and BSP.
The Dalit community of Meerapur believes that today is the time to support Chandrashekhar Azad, whom they see as a strong leader. Earlier, BSP had the traditional support of Dalits, but this time ASP has changed its strategy and turned this support in its favor. Apart from this, the support of Muslim society towards ASP candidate Zahid Hussain can give ASP a significant edge.
The growing influence of ASP on the Meerapur seat has made the contest even tougher, especially when Congress has withdrawn from the by-election under the 'India' alliance. This decision has strengthened the alliance between SP, RLD and ASP. The promotion of Dalit-Muslim unity by ASP is believed to strengthen the position of ASP in the elections.
The results of these by-elections to be held on November 13 on nine assembly seats of Uttar Pradesh including Meerapur can affect not only regional politics but also the upcoming electoral strategies of the state. Especially in view of the 2027 assembly elections, this election can prove to be an important test of Dalit-Muslim unity.
Parties like BSP and ASP are trying to manage the caste vote bank in the state. At the same time, a direct contest is also being considered between BJP and Samajwadi Party in these by-elections. Now it will be interesting to see to what extent the unity of Dalit and Muslim society helps ASP to get success on Meerapur seat.
