President Murmu's view on the contribution of Buddhism
President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday stressed the global influence of the teachings of Buddhism at the First Asian Buddhist Summit in New Delhi. She said that in the present times when the world is facing many crises, Buddhism has unique knowledge to save humanity. On this occasion, she also highlighted the objectives of this conference organized in collaboration with the Government of India and the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC).
The need for a message of peace and non-violence
President Murmu said that the main message of the teachings of Buddhism is peace and non-violence. Buddha's life and his teachings are enough to teach the whole world how we can achieve true peace by being free from conflict, greed and hatred. She said that according to Buddha, greed and hatred are the root causes of our sorrows, and only by eliminating them can true happiness be achieved.
Role of religion: Contributing to strengthening Asia
The President stressed that efforts should be made to unite and empower Asia through the teachings of Buddhism. He said that this religion has the potential to counter narrow sectarianism and encourage broad thinking. Discussing the objectives of the conference, he expressed confidence that this summit would prove to be a milestone in strengthening peace and stability in Asia.
Preservation of Pali and Prakrit languages
President Murmu expressed happiness that the Government of India has accorded 'classical language' status to Pali and Prakrit. She said financial assistance will be provided for preservation of the literary treasures of these languages. This step will play a vital role in the revival of languages in which the teachings of the Buddha are preserved.
The role of Buddhism in the climate crisis
President Murmu said that at present the world is facing not only conflict but also climate crisis. In such a situation, the teachings of Buddhism will not only make humans aware of the environment but will also suggest ways to bring balance in every aspect of life.
India: The Holy Land of Religion and Spirituality
Speaking on the sacred land of India, President Murmu said that this land has been the birthplace of great saints, gurus and sadhaks for centuries. Among these guides, Lord Buddha holds a unique place, who guided humanity towards non-violence, compassion and self-peace.
