10 innocent newborns lost their lives due to fire in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) at Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi. 55 newborns were admitted in the ward at the time of the accident, out of which 45 were saved. The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the families of the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep grief over the incident. A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the matter.

On Friday night at around 10:45, a fire broke out in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi, creating chaos everywhere. According to eyewitnesses, first smoke was seen coming out of the NICU ward and then flames started rising. The fire engulfed the entire ward in a few minutes.


Painful death of 10 innocent people

At the time of the fire, 55 newborn babies were admitted in the ward. 45 of them were rescued, but 10 children died due to burns and suffocation. This incident created chaos in the hospital premises. The relatives kept crying and pleading to save their children.


Fire brigade and army took over the front

As soon as the fire was reported, about 15 fire engines and army personnel reached the spot. The fire was brought under control with joint efforts. Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Sachin Mahor said that the fire spread rapidly due to excessive oxygen in the NICU.


PM and CM expressed condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as heartbreaking and expressed condolences. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered an inquiry into the accident and asked to submit the report within 12 hours.


Declaration of compensation

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased children and Rs 50,000 each to the families of the injured.

Action on three levels for investigation

On the instructions of the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak visited the spot. He said that the accident will be investigated at three levels:

  1. Administrative investigation: By the health department team.
  2. Police investigation: To find out the culprits.
  3. Magisterial inquiry: For detailed and impartial report.

Question on fire safety audit

However, a fire safety audit was conducted in the hospital in February 2024 and a mock drill in June 2024. Despite this, this accident has raised questions on the seriousness of safety measures.  Initial investigation has revealed that the fire broke out due to a technical fault in the oxygen concentrator. The fire department team is confirming this. The pain of the family members and mourning in the hospital There is a sad atmosphere in the hospital premises. The family members are demanding justice for their lost children. The administration has assured that strict action will be taken against the culprits.
