Sabarmati Express derailed near Kanpur: Railway Minister's statement released, no casualties reported

The Sabarmati Express (train number 19168) travelling from Varanasi to Ahmedabad derailed between Kanpur and Bhimsen stations on Saturday morning, derailing 22 coaches. The accident occurred after the engine hit an object on the track. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The Indian Railways has arranged buses and alternate travel options to Ahmedabad for the passengers. An investigation is underway, led by the Intelligence Bureau and the UP Police.

Sabarmati Express derailed near Kanpur: Railway Minister's statement released, no casualties reported

INDC Network : Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) : The Sabarmati Express (Train No. 19168), which was traveling from Varanasi to Ahmedabad, derailed between Kanpur and Bhimsen stations on Saturday morning. A total of 22 coaches derailed. The incident occurred around 2:29 AM, approximately 30 minutes after the train departed from Kanpur Central Station. Immediately after the incident, Indian Railways arranged buses to help passengers reach Kanpur and made further arrangements for their continued journey to Ahmedabad. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the accident. Kanpur ADM Rakesh Verma confirmed that there were no injuries. According to the loco pilot, a stone fell on the front part of the engine, causing significant damage and leading to the derailment.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the engine "collided with an object placed on the track and derailed." He also mentioned that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) would investigate the matter. According to him, "sharp impact marks were found on the cattle guard (front part) of the engine, and the evidence has been secured." A Railway Board official stated that initial reports suggest a stone might have fallen on the engine, damaging the cattle guard and causing the derailment. Following this incident, Indian Railways canceled seven trains and diverted the routes of three others. Earlier, at 1:20 AM, the Patna-Indore train had passed through the same track without any issues.
