Heartfelt Gratitude: A Family-Like Bond with Wayanad
“My dearest brothers and sisters, thank you for being here today. The love and affection you have shown me everywhere I go is overwhelming. Each embrace, each welcome, makes me feel like I am a part of your family. I don't think I've ever experienced such love before, and I'll be sure to tell my children to hug me a bit more as they certainly have competition from all of you!” Priyanka Gandhi began, her voice reflecting genuine warmth and gratitude.
Recalling the strong connection her brother Rahul Gandhi shares with the people of Wayanad, she acknowledged the hardships he has faced in his political journey. “For over two decades, he has endured attacks and campaigns aiming to tarnish his image, led by the BJP under Narendra Modi Ji. But you, my brothers and sisters, have always stood by him because you recognize his fight for truth and justice. And it is from you that he drew the strength to walk 4,000 kilometers from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, journeying for unity, peace, and love.”
Wayanad’s Harmony and Spirit: A Model of Unity in Diversity
Gandhi took a moment to reflect on the unique, inclusive spirit of Wayanad. “Your community is a beautiful example of India’s essence. Here in Wayanad, where you have the Manikunnu temple, St. Mary’s Forane Church, and mosques, you all live in harmony. The divisive politics that BJP promotes has not tarnished your spirit of unity. You hold true to India’s values, and this unity should make you proud.”
Yet, she acknowledged the difficulties that have persisted across the country. Rising unemployment, inflation, and hardships in everyday life affect everyone, especially women struggling to meet basic needs and farmers facing unpredictable challenges.
The Call for Basic Necessities: Healthcare, Roads, and Safety
During her visit, Gandhi heard many pleas for better healthcare facilities, specifically a long-desired medical college for Wayanad. “I met laborers and MGNREGA workers who told me their wages are low, but their greatest need is a medical college and an accessible road,” she shared. She recalled a harrowing story of a woman whose husband was trampled by an elephant, highlighting the ongoing struggle with human-animal conflicts in the region. The need for a reliable healthcare system, a solution for animal conflict, and a safe passage through the night are issues that demand resolution.
Agriculture Woes: Supporting Wayanad’s Farmers
As Gandhi spoke with farmers growing crops like coffee, tea, and spices, their challenges in making ends meet became painfully clear. “I heard of farmers suffering crop losses due to rain, facing inadequate compensation, and struggling with wildlife destroying their fields. One farmer told me how outsiders view the peacocks as beautiful, while for him, they are a source of lost livelihood.”
To address these long-standing issues, Gandhi suggested a push toward food processing and marketing for local crops. “The cinnamon you grow here is unmatched in its fragrance and quality. It should be recognized globally. By investing in better processing and packaging, we can help farmers receive fair prices and make Wayanad’s produce known worldwide.”
Embracing Wayanad’s Potential: Boosting Tourism and Sports for Growth
With the rich natural and cultural resources in Wayanad, Gandhi proposed initiatives for tourism to bolster the local economy. “Eco-tourism, spiritual tourism, and adventure tourism can bring opportunities to places like Thusharagiri, Arippara, and Palakkayam. Infrastructure improvements and support for small businesses in tourism can help build a prosperous Wayanad,” she explained, envisioning a vibrant tourism industry complemented by local homestays and sustainable growth.
She also expressed a heartfelt wish to support the youth in sports. “I see children playing soccer and volleyball with such passion, just like my own son. I want to open doors for them through better sports facilities, fixed stadiums, and coaching programs that can lead them to play on world stages.”
A Pledge to Stand by Wayanad
In her closing remarks, Gandhi assured the people of Wayanad that her commitment to their welfare extends beyond promises. “My brother has tried his best to improve conditions here, from healthcare services to infrastructure, but I am here to continue that work. I will be your voice in Parliament, pushing for your rights, advocating for medical facilities, and ensuring that your needs are heard.”
She ended her speech with a story that resonated with the mothers in the audience, likening her devotion to the people of Wayanad to a mother’s commitment to her children. “As a mother, I understand responsibility, duty, and sacrifice. I understand your love, and I pledge to be here for you, always. For me, each of you represents a strong bond of love, a duty I take seriously. If you give me the chance to represent you, I will not let you down.”
