Singham Again Writer Denies Ramayana Marketing Claims: Film Was Always Rooted in Mythological Themes, Not Just for Diwali
As "Singham Again" gears up for a Diwali release, one of its writers, Milap Zaveri, addresses claims that the film exploits Ramayana themes purely as a seasonal marketing tool. Zaveri clarifies that the Ramayana references were integral to the script from the start, emphasizing the original intent to blend the iconic Hindu epic with Rohit Shetty’s popular Cop Universe. The film, which features an ensemble cast portraying symbolic characters from Ramayana, was initially set for an August 15 release, making the Diwali timing a mere coincidence. With action, mythological elements, and intense patriotism, "Singham Again" is set to draw audiences.
INDC Network : Entertainment : Rohit Shetty’s latest film, Singham Again, is already causing a stir as it brings the well-loved Singham character back to the big screen this Diwali. However, with the release of its trailer, some viewers speculated that the film was using Ramayana references primarily as a Diwali marketing strategy. Responding to this, one of the film’s writers, Milap Zaveri, firmly denied any such claims.
Speaking to Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, Zaveri emphasized that the concept of blending Ramayana elements with the Singham series was in place from the very beginning, long before Diwali was chosen as the release date. According to Zaveri, the initial release date was set for August 15, entirely independent of Diwali or any festive season. However, due to delays in the production schedule, the film's release coincidentally aligned with the Diwali period. He clarified, “We haven’t added Ramayana to encash Diwali. Ramayan was in the script right from the start, even when we were not coming to theatres on Diwali.”
The idea to merge Ramayana with the Singham Cop Universe was originally proposed by writer Kshitij Patwardhan, who introduced this unique concept to director Rohit Shetty. Shetty, known for his larger-than-life storytelling and action-packed movies, embraced the idea, creating a narrative where each character symbolizes a figure from the Ramayana, including Lord Rama, Sita, Ravana, Lakshman, Jatayu, Sugreeva, and Lord Hanuman.
The film boasts a stellar cast, including Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Akshay Kumar, Arjun Kapoor, and Tiger Shroff. In a move that builds on the Ramayana theme, Singham Again's first song, Jai Bajrangbali, is inspired by the Hanuman Chalisa, amplifying the film’s mythological influence.
Zaveri expressed his belief that Singham Again surpasses its predecessors in both story and emotional depth, attributing this improvement to the infusion of Ramayana’s themes. He remarked, “On the script level, 100 percent it is better than the other Singhams. The emotion of Ramayan that Rohit has brought into the script is beautiful. It is going to create a place in every Indian’s heart.”
As the third standalone Singham film within Shetty’s Cop Universe, Singham Again not only brings in familiar characters from Simmba and Sooryavanshi but also creates an Avengers-style crossover event in the Bollywood sphere. With Shetty’s signature high-octane action scenes, larger-than-life sequences, and patriotic fervor, Singham Again is poised to attract audiences, with or without its Ramayana influences.
The film, which premieres on November 1, will go head-to-head with Kartik Aaryan's Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, setting up a highly anticipated Diwali clash at the box office.
