Demand for Bharat Ratna for Ratan Tata Grows After His Death, Maharashtra Cabinet Supports Proposal

The death of Ratan Tata, a beloved Indian industrialist and philanthropist, has reignited a long-standing demand for him to be honored with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. Tata, who was previously awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, has yet to receive the Bharat Ratna despite his immense contributions to Indian industry and philanthropy. The Maharashtra Cabinet recently approved a proposal to recommend his name for the award, urging the central government to consider bestowing it posthumously. Social media is abuzz with tributes and calls for the honor, while Tata himself, in 2021, had humbly requested his supporters to stop the campaign for the Bharat Ratna, expressing that his contributions to India's growth were his true reward. In Indian history, J.R.D. Tata remains the only industrialist to have received this prestigious honor, back in 1992. Meanwhile, the rule limiting the number of Bharat Ratna recipients to three per year has been relaxed in recent years, including in 2024 when five individuals were awarded the honor, raising hopes that Ratan Tata may yet receive it.

Demand for Bharat Ratna for Ratan Tata Grows After His Death, Maharashtra Cabinet Supports Proposal

INDC Netwrok : Maharashtra : The recent passing of Ratan Tata, a widely respected industrialist and philanthropist, has sparked fresh calls for him to be honored posthumously with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor. Tata, who had already received the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, is yet to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, despite his vast contributions to the country's industrial and social landscape.

Tata, during his lifetime, remained humble about such accolades. In February 2021, when a campaign for awarding him the Bharat Ratna gained traction on social media, he publicly requested his supporters to stop their efforts, stating that he felt fortunate to be an Indian and to contribute to the country's prosperity. However, with his passing, emotions are running high across the country. Tributes have poured in from leaders, politicians, and the general public, with many renewing their calls for the government to honor him with the Bharat Ratna. Social media platforms have been flooded with the hashtag #BharatRatnaForRatanTata, as users pay homage to his life and legacy.

On October 10, 2024, the Maharashtra Cabinet passed a proposal urging the central government to consider awarding Ratan Tata the Bharat Ratna posthumously. The proposal will now be forwarded to the central government for further review and consideration.

J.R.D. Tata, Ratan Tata's predecessor, was the first and only industrialist to have been awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1992. This sets a precedent for the possibility of Ratan Tata receiving the same honor. Additionally, the usual rule that limits Bharat Ratna awards to a maximum of three individuals per year was broken twice—once in 1999 and again in 2024. This year's five Bharat Ratna recipients include Karpoori Thakur, M.S. Swaminathan, P.V. Narasimha Rao, L.K. Advani, and Chaudhary Charan Singh, providing hope that more names, including Ratan Tata, could be added to the list soon.
