INDC Network: Uttar Pradesh: The assembly by-elections to be held on November 13 have taken a very interesting turn in the political scenario of Uttar Pradesh. This contest between Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is not only a question of power display for the BJP and SP, but will also be a big test of their credibility. In these by-elections, there will be a contest on nine assembly seats, in which a direct clash between the BJP and the SP can be seen, because the Congress has decided not to field its candidates on these seats.
There are many important events in the background of these by-elections. Yogi Adityanath's leadership ability was being questioned after the BJP suffered a setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in such a situation, these by-elections will prove to be a test of his charisma and leadership. Some senior leaders from within the party raised questions on the functioning of the government, which has made these by-elections even more important for the BJP.
Yogi's aggressive election campaign
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided to personally lead the campaign for the by-elections. He considers it a great opportunity to restore the prestige of the BJP and that is why he has addressed public meetings in all the nine assembly constituencies. He has held meetings with local leaders and party workers to formulate the election strategy.
The state government organised "Rojgar Melas" to attract the youth and announced new schemes for farmers and women during this period. Yogi ensured that his aggressive election campaign breached the strongholds of the Samajwadi Party. He organised party workers and also played a key role in the selection of candidates. Groups of three ministers were formed, which were given the responsibility of campaigning in different constituencies.
Yogi accelerated preparations for the by-elections by holding high-level meetings with top BJP state unit leaders. The BJP, which is contesting eight of the nine seats, has fielded four OBC candidates to balance social equations.

Akhilesh's subtle strategy
On the other hand, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav's strategy has been a little different. He has been working from the election war room in the party office most of the time during the campaign. Akhilesh has held meetings with party leaders and officials to strengthen the election strategy and has instructed them to strengthen booth committees, check voter lists and hold meetings in BJP's strongholds as well.
Akhilesh Yadav is confident that the backward, dalit, and minority (PDA) formula will work in the bypolls. It was this formula that helped the Samajwadi Party emerge as the single largest party in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The SP won 37 parliamentary seats, while India Block's ally Congress won six seats, taking the total number of India Block seats to 43.
Political equations and electoral equations
In the by-elections of nine assembly seats of Uttar Pradesh, seats like Karhal, Kundarki, Sisamau and Katehari are considered strongholds of the Samajwadi Party. Akhilesh Yadav has visited only Karhal, which is a stronghold of the SP. At the same time, the BJP is trying to strengthen its hold in these areas.
It is worth noting that out of the nine seats on which by-elections are to be held, eight seats have fallen vacant after the MLAs were elected as members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha elections. These include Karhal (Mainpuri), Katehari (Ambedkarnagar), Kundarki (Moradabad), Khair (Aligarh), Majhwan (Mirzapur), Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar), Phulpur (Prayagraj) and Ghaziabad Sadar (Ghaziabad) seats.
The Sisamau seat had fallen vacant after SP MLA Irfan Solanki was disqualified.
