Buddhist community angry over havan at Sankisa Buddha stupa: Bisari Devi temple dispute deepens once again
The havan performed at the Buddha stupa in Sankisa has caused outrage in the Buddhist community. Buddhist followers opposed the havan performed by Sanatan Dharmis at the holy stupa of Lord Buddha. They called it a violation of the rules of the Archaeological Department and a disregard of the court order. At the same time, the court has set a time limit of 6 months to settle the long-standing dispute between Bisari Devi Temple and Buddha Stupa. The case in this matter is pending in the court since 1994, which is expected to be settled soon.
INDC Network : Uttar Pradesh : Farrukhabad : The recent havan and pujan performed by Sanatan Dharmis at Lord Buddha's stupa located at Sankisa in Farrukhabad district has stirred controversy. The Buddhist community has not only considered this event as disrespectful but also saw it as a violation of the orders of the Archaeological Department and the court. The event became more controversial when BJP leader Atul Dixit and his supporters performed havan near Lord Buddha's stupa and chanted slogans in praise of Bisari Devi.
Description of the event :
It is being told that a havan was performed on the holy stupa of Lord Buddha in front of the so-called Bisari Devi temple located in Sankisa, which proved to be extremely objectionable for the Buddhist followers. Karmaveer Shakya, President of Dhammaloko Buddha Vihar Seva Trust, located in Sankisa, expressed anger over this entire episode and called it a violation of the rules of the Archaeological Department. He says that the havan pujan by the Sanatan Dharmis is a contempt of the court orders, which prohibits any religious activity on the stupa.
Karmaveer Shakya further said that the Sanatan Dharmis had placed broken idols years ago with the aim of occupying the stupa, which is being promoted as Bisari Devi. It is also being said that Bisari Devi is not a goddess of Sanatan Dharma and the name of this goddess is not mentioned in religious texts.

Judicial Disputes :
The dispute over the Buddhist stupa and Bisari Devi temple located in Sankisa has a long history. A case on this issue is pending in the Civil Judge Senior Division Hawali Court of Farrukhabad since 1994. This dispute escalated when Bisari Devi was installed in the temple of Sankisa and the Buddhist community objected to it. The Buddhist community believes that this place belongs to Lord Buddha and no other goddess or deity should be worshipped here.
In this case, Sankisa Mukti Sangharsh Samiti convenor Karmaveer Shakya had filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court, in which he demanded speedy settlement of the case. The court has ordered settlement of this dispute within 6 months.
After this decision of the court, it is expected that this long-standing dispute between the Buddhist stupa and the Bisari Devi temple may end soon. According to the court order, the Civil Judge (J.D.), Hawali, Farrukhabad has been directed to settle the matter within 6 months. If any party is given unnecessary adjournment in the hearing, the court can recommend a fine.
Background of the case :
In this case filed in 1994, the supporters of Bisari Devi temple say that this temple is very old and it has no connection with Buddhism. They also claim that the idol of the goddess installed in the temple is being worshipped by the Sanatan Dharmis for many years. At the same time, the Buddhist parties say that this place belongs to Lord Buddha and it is inappropriate for the Sanatan Dharmis to install the goddess here and worship her.
According to Buddhist followers, this site is the property of the Archaeological Department and any kind of encroachment or religious interference here is illegal. They say that the Sanatan Dharmis have installed the broken idols here in the form of Bisari Devi so that they can establish their hold on this site.
Court proceedings :
The court has ordered to give its verdict within 6 months after giving an opportunity of hearing to all the parties in this case. The next date of hearing of the case has been fixed for 15 October. The defendant side says that this case is expected to be settled soon, as hearing dates are being fixed every week. Meanwhile, Buddhist community leader Karmaveer Shakya has requested the district administration to stop such havan and pujan at the Buddha stupa in future, so that religious peace and harmony is maintained.
It is clear from the controversy arising due to the havan at the Buddha stupa in Sankisa that the dispute between the Bisari Devi temple and the Buddhist stupa is now moving towards a judicial decision. Respecting the religious sentiments of both the communities, it is the need of the hour to follow the court order and find a solution to this dispute.
